Hebrew is the official language of the state of Israel and belongs to the Semitic language family. About eight million citizens of Israel and Palestine, and also the members of the Jewish communities around the world are Hebrew native speakers.
Hebrew is one of the oldest languages of the world. The most famous "monument" of the Jewish writing is the Old Testament, which was written in Classical Hebrew. From the beginning of our era, Hebrew was the language of the Jewish culture and religion. The modern form of spoken Hebrew was formed only in the 20th century. Formation of the Modern Hebrew language was influenced by other languages, especially by the Yiddish language, as well as some languages of the German and Slavic groups.
The Hebrew writing system is based on the Hebrew alphabet with the use of alefbet ("square script"), which was borrowed from Aramaic in the sixth century B.C. The Hebrew alphabet has no vowels, and consists of twenty-two consonants which are written from the right to the left like in the Arabic writing system.
Nowadays translation into Hebrew is complicated by the presence of regionally-colored pronunciations. For example, the Jews of Eastern Europe speak with Ashkenazi pronunciation, and Spanish and Balkan Jews use the Sephardi pronunciation. The Sephardic dialect is also quite common among Georgian and Arab Jews. By the way, not so long ago (in the 90s of the last century) in the Jewish communities of Ukrainian seaside city of Odessa one could hear the local interpretations of different expressions in Hebrew. So-called "Slavic Jews", who moved abroad later, also had a significant influence on the development of Modern Hebrew.
