Azerbaijani is the official language of the Republic of Azerbaijan, as well as a means of everyday communication for about 30 million people living in Azerbaijan, Iran, Turkey, Georgia, Russia, the United States and Western Europe. According to classification, the Azerbaijani language belongs to the family of Turkic languages and is included in the group of Oghuz languages. The Turkish, Gagauz and Turkmen languages are considered to be related languages.
The scientists date the formation of Azerbaijani written language from the XIII century, while its oral analog is older by 500 or more years. Historically, the territory of Azerbaijan was a part of Russia and Iran in the beginning of the XIX century, so it was divided into two parts. Both states have impeded the relations between the inhabitants of this country divided into two parts. The part of Azerbaijan, which later has achieved independence, has been influenced by Russia and the Russian language. At the same time, the language of the inhabitants of South Azerbaijan has been significantly affected by the Persian language. Despite this, the population of both parts of Azerbaijan has no communication problems.
The Azerbaijani written language was based on the Arabic alphabet until the twentieth century. During the last century, it was made efforts to adapt the script to the Russian or Latin alphabets. Finally, the issue was resolved in 1991 by the adoption of the law on taking the Latin alphabet as a basis for Azerbaijani alphabet.
Modern Azerbaijani language consists of four major dialectical groups:
- eastern (Baku, Guba, Shamakhi dialects, Lankaran, Mugan dialects);
- western (Ganja, Gazakh, Karabakh dialects, Ayrum dialect);
- northern (Shaki dialect, Zaqatala-Qakh dialect);
- southern (Nakhchivan, Ordubad dialects).
