The Kirghiz language acquired the status of the regulatory and nation-wide language of Kirgizia after the dissolution of the Soviet Union. Five million people are native speakers of the Kirghiz language not only in the Republic of Kirgizia but also in certain settlements of Uzbekistan, Gorno-Badakhshan, China, Mongolia, North Afghanistan and Russia.
Kirghiz people are representatives of the most ancient Turkic tribes, which were mentioned in ancient Chinese annals back in the 1st century B.C. In the 19th century, the Kirghiz people was scattered on the grounds of the Khanate of Kokand. In those times, the territorially colored Old Uzbek was considered to be the written language of Kirghiz people.
After accession of Kirgizia to the Russian territory, the Russian language had a ripple effect on Kirghiz and it led to severe clogging of the Kirghiz language by Russian words. Till the 20th century, the modern Kazakh people were called Kirghiz and the population of modern Kirghizia was named Karakirhgiz. Nowadays, the linguists and philologists try to clean the Kirghiz language from the abundant amount of Russian words.
