Voice-over and dubbing

A video may be informative, professionally filmed, and impeccably edited, but how it is perceived depends largely on the voice. Timbre, intonation, speaking pace and appropriate pauses influence the viewer just as much as the words and images.

  • That is precisely why voice-over and dubbing should not be viewed as merely reading out a translated text. It is a full-scale adaptation of content for a different linguistic audience. It aims to ensure that an advert is persuasive, a training course is easy to follow, a corporate video inspires trust, and the characters in a film or game sound natural and expressive.
  • The STATUS KO Translation Center manages the entire process: from script preparation and translation to voice recording, synchronization and final mixing.

What are voice-over and dubbing?

Voice-over is the recording of a translated text over the original audio track or with partial replacement of the original speech. The speakers’ voices may remain audible in the background, whilst a narrator conveys the main content in the target audience’s language.

This format is often chosen for interviews, documentaries, corporate presentations, webinars, lectures and instructional videos.

Dubbing involves completely replacing the original dialogue. A separate actor is selected for each character, and the text is adapted to suit line length, facial expressions, articulation, and the emotional dynamics of the scene.

Dubbing is more complex to produce, but it provides a deeper immersion in the content. This is why it is most commonly used in films, TV series, animation, adverts and video games.

Which voice-over format to choose

The most concise option is single-voice voice-over, where a single narrator reads the entire text. This is well suited to informational material where content plays the leading role.

In two-voice or multi-voice narration, different participants in the dialogue are voiced by separate narrators. This approach makes it easier to follow interviews, news reports, documentaries and educational videos.

With synchronized voice-over, the translated phrases are timed to coincide with the start and end of the original lines. Full dubbing involves an even more precise synchronization of the voice with the character’s actions and lip movements.

The optimal format depends on the purpose of the material, the expected level of immersion, the number of speakers, the deadlines and the budget. Sometimes a single professional voice is quite sufficient. In other projects, however, full dubbing determines the quality of the experience.

What types of content require voice-over

This service is required wherever a voice helps to explain, teach, engage or persuade. The most common types of content for voice-over are: the requirements for each format vary. In a training course, clarity and a calm pace are important; in advertising, emotion and a recognizable intonation; and in corporate videos, precision, persuasiveness and alignment with the brand’s style.

  • advertising and presentation videos;
  • corporate films and video messages;
  • online courses, lectures and webinars;
  • technical instructions;
  • documentaries and interviews;
  • videos for YouTube and social media;
  • audio guides, podcasts and voice menus;
  • mobile apps and video games;
  • feature films, TV series and animation.
Why text for voice-over needs to be adapted

Even a high-quality written translation does not always sound right when spoken aloud. In different languages, a single thought can vary in length, so a translated line sometimes does not fit within the allotted time.

Speeding up the reading makes the voice sound unnatural, whilst mechanical abridgment can distort the meaning. This is precisely why the translator adapts sentence structure while preserving the main idea, tone, and communicative purpose.

Humor, set phrases, cultural references, names, units of measurement, and wordplay require particularly careful attention. In professional materials, terminology is also checked. Legal, medical, technical and financial texts must remain accurate even after stylistic and timing adjustments.

Before recording, the script is prepared for the narrator: stress, pauses, emotional emphasis and the pronunciation of complex names are marked.

How work on a project is carried out

The process begins with an analysis of the video, script and client’s requirements. If there is no text, transcription is carried out – transcribing the speech whilst identifying speakers and time stamps.

After this, the team coordinates the project: a manager oversees deadlines, the exchange of materials, and collaboration between translators, voice-over artists, and technical specialists. The client receives a complete finished product, rather than separate files that still need to be combined manually.

  1. determines the voice-over format;
  2. translates and adapts the script;
  3. agrees on terminology and pronunciation;
  4. selects voice-over artists or actors;
  5. prepares a test recording if required;
  6. records and edits the voice tracks;
  7. synchronizes the dialogue with the video footage;
  8. performs editing and mixing;
  9. checks the finished material.
Voice selection as part of the brand image

The same text can sound formal, warm, dynamic, trustworthy or detached. Therefore, the voice is selected not only based on the voice-over artist’s gender or age.

Tone of voice, delivery style, emotional expression, pace, the target audience and the platform on which the video will be published are all taken into account. For a legal presentation, a restrained and confident delivery is appropriate. Children’s animation requires expressiveness, whilst an advert needs energy that does not veer into artificial grandstanding.

In dubbing, the actor must convey the character’s personality and state of mind. It is important not simply to read the words correctly, but to convey irony, excitement, tension or joy.

The client can listen to demo recordings, and for large projects, agree on a test clip before the main work begins.

Synchronization and technical quality

The viewer may not be aware of the intricacies of sound engineering, but will quickly notice delayed dialogue, background noise, sudden changes in volume, or a voice that is out of sync with the visuals.

During editing, the dialogue is synchronized with the video footage, cleaned of unwanted sounds and leveled in terms of volume. The voice is blended with background music, ambient sounds and effects so that the words remain clear and the material retains its emotional impact.

In full dubbing, pauses, articulation and lip-syncing are also taken into account. Sometimes, to ensure natural synchronization, a phrase has to be reworked or re-recorded.

The finished material is checked specifically within the context of the video. This allows us to assess not just an individual audio track, but the overall perception of the scene.

Multilingual dubbing of international content

To reach multiple markets, each language version is prepared separately. A mechanical replacement of words fails to take into account regional linguistic norms, cultural characteristics, and differences in phrase length.

Even English, Spanish, French or Portuguese may require a specific regional variant. The text must sound natural to the people it is addressed to.

In multilingual projects, it is important to maintain a consistent brand tone. To this end, glossaries, pronunciation guidelines and recommendations on vocal delivery are prepared. All versions are checked against common criteria but adapted to the specific language.

This approach is particularly relevant for international companies, educational platforms, software developers, tourism projects and producers of multimedia content.

What determines the cost

The cost is determined after reviewing the materials and clarifying the brief. The quote is influenced by: A short promotional video sometimes requires more creative and directorial work than a lengthy lecture. Therefore, it is not entirely accurate to assess a project solely based on the number of minutes.

  • the duration of the recording;
  • the number of languages and voices;
  • the format — single-voice narration or full dubbing;
  • the availability of a finished script;
  • the need for transcription and translation;
  • the complexity of the terminology;
  • the level of synchronization;
  • the extent of editing and mixing;
  • the format of the final files;
  • the deadlines.

Before work begins, STATUS KO agrees the scope of work, deadlines and cost so that the client understands the budget structure in advance.

Quality control and confidentiality

Quality is ensured at every stage. First, the content, terminology and natural flow of the translation are checked. During recording, diction, stress, intonation and adherence to the agreed style are monitored. After editing, synchronization, sound clarity and the completeness of the material are assessed.

Translators with expertise in the relevant subject area are assigned to specialized projects. This helps to avoid formulations that are grammatically correct but professionally inaccurate.

Data protection is equally important. Internal training materials, corporate presentations, advertising campaigns before their launch, or files containing personal data may be submitted for voice-over work. The materials are used solely to fulfill the order, and where necessary, the parties agree on specific confidentiality terms and access restrictions.
