The Malay language is similar by the sound and pronunciation to the Minangkabau language, which is wide-spread in the western and central part of Sumatra.

In 1956, the Malay language was recognized as the official language of the modern Malaysia and Brunei. In 1970, the governments of Indonesia and Malaysia began compiling the spelling dictionary and smoothing all the differences between these two languages.

The whole evolution stage of the Indonesian (Malay) language can be divided into three periods:

1. The Indian period: from 300 till 1200 A.D.

2. The Muslim period: from 1100 till 1600.

3. The European period: since 1600.
